The top and sides are almost completely black. It has not been restored just very well preserved. This type of flat iron also known as a sad iron was in many homes before the invention of the electric iron. It was heated by putting it on a cook stove. This vintage piece is an ideal farmhouse doorstop. The brand is unknown but there is a stamp of the number 8 on top. They were used during the 18th and 19th centuries. The age of this one is an estimate. See less
