A stunning authentic antique Meiji Era (1867-1912) Japanese pearl and shell inlaid profusely hand carved hardwood chair with beautifully aged patina, warm rich coloring, dark grain detail, and interesting provenance!
Japan, turn of the late 19th / early 20th century, high-quality solid wood construction, crafted of the highest quality and highly sought-after warm rich dark purplish reddish Hong mu wood (Chinese rosewood similar to exotic purpleheart), likely for the export market, featuring an intricately hand carved and pierced openwork sculptural design.
Surmounted with opposing figural dragons with central flaming pearl and undulating serpentine shaped body crest, standing dragon reticulated splat with incised detailing, flanked by gently curved rounded square rails embellished with delicate mother of pearl and shell flower inlays, over spacious seat with richly figured square HungMa panel framed by planked border with molded edge, over heavily carved and pierced contoured skirt with scalloped edge, elegantly raised on short carved cabriole legs embellished with unusual foo dog guardian lion like mask knees, terminating in talon claw-and-ball feet.
