A superb Meiji Era (1867-1912) intricately hand carved Japanese hardwood writing table with beautifully aged patina, warm wood coloring, richly figured grain patterns, and interesting provenance!
Japan, late 19th / early 20th century, featuring the highest quality and now sought-after warm rich dark purplish reddish Hong mu (Chinese rosewood similar to exotic purpleheart), exceptionally executed in sophisticated far-east Asian taste, this remarkable example intended for the high demand export market, highlighted by the period Art Nouveau influences.
Sure to elevate any space with its most distinctive silhouette, having a rectangular shaped tabletop with projecting rouned corners framed by decorative meandering key relief border and edge carvings, above a simple concealed frieze drawer to opposing sides, flanked by ornate profusely carved pierced lacquered scalloped apron adorned in interlaced leafy fiolated sculpture ornamentation, the elaborate intertwined floral foliage vine carvings continue down the gently curved outsweept cabriole legs, with bold knee carvings, terminating in scroll feet. Retaining various adhesive paper labels to the underside. circa 1900
*Please note, at the time of writing this a similarly styled dragon chair from the same estate is available separately. Shown in last photos. Chair is not included, please see our other listings to purchase*
