Circa 1920-40 teak & brass pedestal binnacle, English. An exceptionally fine example by Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird, Ltd, formed in 1913. With oil lanters (missing from housings) the ship master could guide through the roughest seas day & night. Maker's label plaque: Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird, Ltd. Patt. 1960Z3 Binnacle No. 1286K/5K Glasgow & London. Level with British Royal Navy insignia. Tilling Stevens Ltd Royal Navy Compass. Chart capsule. The massive base allowed 12 bolts to secure it to the deck. Sold as decoration, although the compass is exact.
