This rare and beautiful museum quality art glass piece is fashioned from fused glass with a brilliant and rich palette of cool jewel tones and metallic oxides. It is representative of Thomas' philosophical approach to his work, which was reinterpreting basic forms with new energy and a distinctly modern point of view.
Roger Thomas was born in Los Angeles, California in 1951. He began working with stained glass in the 1970s, and by the 1980s was developing his own innovative techniques with fused glass. After moving to Portland, Oregon to take a job at his favorite glass factory in 1988, he established his second studio and began to “make things” in earnest.
Mr. Thomas was well-known for his innovations in fused glass techniques, as well as his kiln-formed glass paintings. As a self-professed “maker of things,” Roger became an artist by accident and feels that art is the detritus of the creative act, and creating is a worthwhile goal for his life.
Mr. Thomas died in February 2021, but his legacy as a master glass artist lives on. His pieces are in many important collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. His work has been shown at the Corning Museum of Art, New York, as well as in other museums and galleries. His vision for layering glass to create depth of design was remarkable.
