The object is of oval-shaped, well-hollowed chalcedony with a flared neck is a fine example of Qing Dynasty craftsmanship, probably late 18th to early 19th century. The deep rich amber color chalcedony was a highly prized hardstone for snuff bottles, valued for its translucence, subtle color variations, and suitability for fine hollowing. (It has been said chalcedony snuff bottles were highly prized in the mid Qing period, even above jade bottles.) The oval form was a classic, elegant shape favored for its pleasing balance and comfortable handling. The meaning of well hollowed expresses high quality workmanship, as skilled artisans maxximized interior space without making the walls too thin. The flared neck of the bottle provided visual refinement which allows easier access for the spoon. The well hollowed shape shows subtle bands and spots, natural inclusions natural to chalcedony. It is paired with a green stone like aventurine stopper.
The bottle stands on a custom made hardwood stand, a support suitable for the thin foot. On the foot is a series of numbers in black ink. The bottle is de-accessioned from a museum that is now closed.
