This Really is a Great Looking Authentic Antique American Stoneware Liquid Storage Jug. Circa Approx 1870s. The Classic American Greige Color Salt Glaze Exterior is Nicely Textured. The Front of the Jug is Beautifully Hand Decorated with a Large Size and Exceptionally Nice Shade of Blue Stylized Flower Sprig Design. It is Embossed with a "2" Denoting its Two Gallon Storage Capacity. It is Also Embossed with the Well Documented Makers Name - NEW YORK STONEWARE COMPANY in FORT EDWARD. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made For Everyday - Utilitarian Use. Jugs were Commonly Used to Store Liquids such as Ciders, Vinegar, Ales, Liquors & Spirits, Spring Water, Oils, Molasses, Etc. It is in Very Nice All Original Condition - Displays Beautifully. It has 1 Small Chip a the Spout - No Cracks - No Repairs. There is a Darker Patch on the Left Side - Possibly Age and Use or Kiln Firing Related. PLEASE NOTE That it has a Small Hole Drilled on the Back Side - Base Are. This Indicates that it was at One Time Possibly Converted or Intended to be Used as a TABLE LAMP BASE CONVERSION - HOLE DRILLED TO ACCOMMODATE THE ELECTRIC POWER CORD - PLEASE SEE LAST 2 PHOTOGRAPHS. If You Have Been Looking For a Stoneware Jug to Use as a Lamp Base This Would Make the Conversion Easier and Display Much Better as Used.
