A fine & rare antique Georgian Scottish inlaid mahogany eight day tall case grandfather clock, by Patrick Bews, Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, circa 1810. Just professionally serviced and overhauled by a professional clock-smith.
This very rare antique clock was made in the Orkney Islands, in Kirkwall which is the largest town in the archipelago, the islands are located north off the Scottish mainland. The clock is housed in a mahogany case which is inlaid with satinwood stringing, the clock hood has a carved scrolled frieze with a central gilt brass ball finial, the hood door is flanked with a pair of ribbed columns having gilt brass capitals & bases.
The cream painted dial has a arched top with a colorful painted floral wreath with the maker's name to the inside "Pat. k Bews Kirkwall", the corners with gilt spandrels & floral sprays. The chapter ring with both Roman & Arabic numerals in black, there is a secondary calendar ring and also a seconds dial, the twin winding arbors are for both time & strike, the clock chimes the hours on a mellow sounding bell, the bell can be rendered silent if the strike arbor is not wound.
The base having a door inlaid with satinwood stringing and encloses the original weights and pendulum with a brass bob, the original door key is present, the door is flanked by ribbed quartered columns and raised on bracket feet.
The clock has just been fully cleaned & serviced, works perfectly & keeps great time (please see the attached video), the original winding crank is present.
There were very few clock-makers on the Orkney Islands at this time, this a rather rare & unusual clock and is ready to grace your space.
Chairish sells clocks only with display as the intended use. The mechanical elements are not guaranteed to be in working order by Chairish. However Bloomsbury Fine Art & Antiques does guarantee the clock's mechanical workings, as it has just been overhaled & professionally cleaned.
