Here we have a gorgeous antique vanity set from Sligh Furniture Company which was founded in 1880 by Charles Sligh. He worked for Berkey & Gay prior to starting his own company. Sligh Furniture became quite famous when U.S presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Benjamin Harrison each purchased Sligh bedroom suites.
This listing is for a five drawer vanity with trifold mirror and matching cane and gesso decorated chair. All glass and hardware is original. The larger center drawer locks and the key is present. Darling fluted Frenchy legs and gorgeous gesso details. There is no gesso loss on the vanity. However, the chair back has very minimal loss to the floral garland and bows. Please examine magnified photo. Dovetailed drawers. Made in America, a stunning and rare set in superb condition.
I've enjoyed this vanity for many years and I also happen to have the matching dresser with gimbaled mirror. Please see the separate listing if interested in the dresser.
I was told by heirs of the original purchaser that this bedroom suite was purchased in either 1907 or 1917 (unfortunately I can't remember which). However, my research revealed that in 1910 Sligh Furniture employed the French designer Rene Guenaux. This vanity bears his design influence so I'm certain the set is no newer than 1917.
All of the pieces came to me in their original yellow paint which was quite worn. I had the set painted many years ago with Sherwin Williams Classic Pro Enamel in Extra White Satin. There were a few old dents and dings and some very minute gesso losses (as would be expected with age and use), but these are painted over and not too noticeable. The mirror is currently removed and wrapped for safe transport. Buyer will need to reattach the mirror with the screws and brackets which are bagged, tagged and located in the center drawer along with the key. PLEASE examine the photos and feel free to ask questions... thanks for looking!
