An early 19th century English Mahogany Traveling Lap Desk with brass mounts, now mounted on a detachable contemporary mahogany stand. The top folds open revealing a green felt-lined writing surface ( felt is a later replacement) with two lidded wells in the front, the smaller one with ink wells; the larger one for pens. The writing surface in the front is hinged and opens to reveal a deep well for storage and also another compartment with a sliding lid for valuables. The other side of the writing surface is also hinged and opens to an ell for storing papers and envelopes.
The top is mounted with a brass quiver and arrows. The front has an old shrinkage crack that has been filled and there is minor wear, scratches and stains throughout, to be expected given its age. Nonetheless, a handsome piece with great character that makes an ideal side table next to a chair.
The lap desk measures 21"w x 11"d x 7"t
The stand measures 21 1/2" x 11 1/2" x 15"t
Total height is 22"
