Antique Japanese Netsuke of a Reclining Horse. A netsuke is a miniature sculpture, originating in 17th century Japan. Initially a simply-carved button fastener on the cords of an inrō box, netsuke later developed into ornately sculpted objects of craftsmanship. This early 20th century ivory netsuke is of a recumbent horse with a finely detailed mane and tail. Netsukes depict animals and or other items associated with mythical beliefs. Fine antique netsukes can be identified by their intricate design and use of pricey materials such as ivory (which was not illegal in the 17th through 19th centuries), jade, or precious stones. Artist's signature on the base, with holes drilled for function.
Netsuke were used back in the day by Japanese men who wore kimono with no pockets and needed a container to store personal belongings, such as pipes, tobacco, money and seals, resulting in the development of containers known as sagemono, which were hung by cords from the robes' sashes. The fastener which secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke. Netsuke evolved over time from being strictly utilitarian into objects of great artistic merit and an expression of extraordinary craftsmanship. Netsuke production was most popular during the Edo period (1603–1867).
