Sedan chairs and palanquins were seen in China hundreds of years. Nobles, court officials, and the wealthy were carried through crowded cities and over roads in a comfortable covered chair held and propelled by 2 or 4 men.

There is some amazing detail here such as the faces of the barefoot bearers and the woven cane of the chair.

Made in China, early 20th C.
