In the 20th century, archaeological excavations unearthed large quantities of lacquer objects dated to the Warring States Period (475-221 BCE.) These objects were considered the best representations of early lacquer wares. This art form predated the 5th century BCE and continue to flourish today. Prior to new materials that resemble the old red lacquer, the original lacquer came from a resinous sap harvested from a specific tree called the Chinese lacquer tree. The resin is than mixed with cinnabar which gave it the red color. Layers and layers of red lacquer is painted on a core. When the depth of the lacquer on the core is reached, then the carving begins.
The object here is a globular shaped container with a round cover, commonly known as a ginger jar. It is elaborately carved in segments. The top is a repeat pattern of flower scrolls ending in a "C". The middle segment is like a continuous landscape painting featuring overlapping mountains, tall rocks, gardens with willow and pine trees and flowers, bridges, pavilions with lattice windows and pagodas. People are inserted in this garden scape. There is a scholar sitting in an open pavilion with his attendant greeting a guest. The carving is expertly done as if an invitation is extended to enter this garden paradise. A small segment of repeat design at the base completes the design. Unlike its later counterpart, the round top is not a repeat pattern but a compact little landscape with trees and a section of an architectural structure.
The core is not metal but a thin wood core. The interior and bottom is covered with a layer of black lacquer. It has a "CHINA" mark, which was used on imports after 1890 and before 1919.
