Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
There is something so sumptuous about the rutile glaze Frankoma used on its Prairie Green pieces! From varying shades of green and tan with hints of khaki and light brown which is what contributes to the spectacular color spectrum and shine. Rutile is a mineral that contains titanium dioxide. It was a part of the ceramic glaze “recipe” Frankoma used which caused the surface of pottery to variegate and crystallize (on cooling) and display these splendid color variances. Different clays made different greens. Different stocks of rutile also acted differently. This beautiful vase has a scalloped collar ending in curves lines. Frankoma introduced this vase shape in 1934 with scallops that ended in a straight line rather than the curved lines you see in the photos. Curved line vases were introduced 1942 and were made until 1949. I photographed the vase in the round to show all sides and the nuances of the patterns and coloring throughout. This beauty measures 8” x 5” x 5” H/W/D; interior 7½” x 4½” x 4½” H/W/D; weight 2 lbs. 5 oz. In excellent condition. As with all handcrafted pottery, marks and color variances are inherent and add to the charm and uniqueness of the piece. Dating Frankoma pieces is fairly simple. Look at the bottom of the piece and if the clay used appears to be a tan color, then it was created pre-1955 from Ada clay which was mined near the southern Oklahoma town of Ada. After 1955, most pieces were produced from the local Sapulpa red clay. This vase was handcrafted from the tan variation of clay in Ada between 1942 and 1949; makers vase style number is impressed on the underside. A fabulous Art Deco-inspired vase for an avid collector of Frankoma Pottery or the perfect gift for someone who is.
