The two painted glazed ceramic cubes were deaccessioned from Steel Case, possibly from the Showroom at the Merchandise Mart, Chicago. … Read more The two painted glazed ceramic cubes were deaccessioned from Steel Case, possibly from the Showroom at the Merchandise Mart, Chicago. The inventory numbers are still on the labels adhered to the bottom. Although their provenance is better known than their creator, the cubes are attributed to a contemporary ceramic artist Barbara Wells. In my interpretation, Ms Wells painted a series of ethereal landscapes, inhabited by fairies and other magic creatures. I do not know of many artists who paint cubes, these to me, are really successful efforts. As neutral colors, the hue are vibrant, the rendering of botanical elements are almost abstract. The paintings are delicate, and the use of gold paints as highlights is really clever.

The cubes are not signed. I use them as risers to display my objects but their sculptural forms are beautiful to stand up on their own.
