Andy Warhol ( 1928 - 1987 ) is one of the singularly most well known Contemporary artists of all time. His imagery is recognized worldwide. His infamous life, art works, and creative endeavors are like no other artist. He is credited as the very first artist to use common everyday objects and view them in a completely different way while paying homage to their role in our society. Glorifying the common as the beautiful. His technique utilizing a silkscreen method combined with hand finishing in a signature palette of vibrant color hues make the work stand on its own and loved by millions.
Liza Minnelli ( B. 1946 ) the daughter of actress Judy Garland and director Vincent Minnelli, is an American actress, singer, and dancer. Known for her commanding stage presence and powerful Alto singing voice, she has received numerous accolades including an Academy Award, a Bafta Award, an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and four Tony Awards. Her persona and style have cemented her as a gay icon.
Minnelli has recalled that although she visited Andy's factory on more than one occasion, she personally first met Warhol when their friend Halston introduced them in the early 1970's when she posed for the August 1972 cover of Interview Magazine. Later Warhol painted a series of portraits of her based on his polaroids in the late 1970's, by then she was an important part of his inner circle. In Minnelli Warhol found a powerfully iconic face with strong elements ready made for his signature portraiture style. Liza was a quintessential iconic Warhol subject portraying the illusive allure if celebrity that deeply inspired Andy.
In 2008 The Musee Des Beaux-Arts DeMontreal in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh presented the exciting exhibition " Warhol Live " revealing the myriad ways Warhol immersed himself in the music of his time.
Tracing back to his introduction to music through the musical comedies, songs, and soundtracks of his youth, portraits of the great film stars of his childhood, and renowned portraits of Pop Music icons manifesting his interest and love of music, Warhol collaborated with famous choreographers, produced music, incorporated music into his films, designed many record albums, filmed live concerts, and created multimedia spectacles.
Although never a musician himself, he appropriated the imagery of Pop Music icon for some of his most arresting and important self portraits. He was always offering a refreshing way to appreciate talent and the evolution of artistry mirroring society's changing tastes and interests. This dynamic exhibition poster from that ambitious exhibition is a beautiful example of the singularity of Warhol's iconic style.
