Store Item: Simon Willard Roxbury MA Tall Case Grandfather Clock Circa 1800 Federal Period
Description: Fine example of an Simon Willard Roxbury Tall Case Clock made circa 1800. Mahogany case that features bonnet with pierced fretwork joining three plinths supporting brass ball and steeple finials. Arched dial door flanked by fluted full columns with brass stop fluting. Paneled molded pendulum door in grain mahogany. Sides of trunk with fluted quarter columns with brass caps and brass stop fluting. Pendulum door with base panel with string inlay resting on French feet. Painted iron dial with four spandrel areas the top decorated with floral designs and bottom with Strawberry designs. Dial features a painted moon phase with Roman numerals, the center of the dial features flanking birds, lower bottom of the dial is signed on the face "Simon Willard" . The movement is constructed in brass and is good quality, the bell strikes on each hour on the hour, which is done on a cast iron bell which is mounted above the movement. Clock includes weights, pendulum and winder. About the maker: Simon Willard was born in Grafton, Massachusetts. In 1780, Simon Willard moved from Grafton to Roxbury with his brother Aaron. In Roxbury, the Willard brothers established reputations as fine clock makers. During the early nineteenth century, the Willard brothers dominated the clock making industry in Massachusetts.
Condition Report: A fine example of an early Simon Willard Roxbury Clock Case has been refinished, the dial has crazing and loss of paint and wear to the numbers, Finials are older brass, but more than likely not the originals. The clock is currently running but is not striking on the hour, the moon phase needs attached. Missing second hand and case key. The clock needs maintained and service. We do not guarantee the working conditions of clocks and highly recommend hiring a professional clock person to clean, service and install the clock after delivery. Shows beautifully.
