The series of 24 plates depicts the trials and tribulations of an attractive widow in the Gilded Age, as designed by Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944). Gibson was a talented and successful commercial artist in the USA, with his work covering the decades between 1890-1920. The pen and ink sketches were titled "The Widow and Her Friends", first published in Life Magazine and the artists own book in 1901. The depicted scenes are titled, expressing Gibson's dry wit. The "Gibson Girl" became synonymous with the ideal woman, tall, elegant, and independent. The plate titled "Some Think She Was in Retirement Too Long. Others are Surprised She's About So Soon." It shows the Gibson Girl with her admirers and the ladies who are jealous. Copyright 1900. See less
