The series of 24 plates depicts the trials and tribulations of an attractive widow in the Gilded Age, as designed by Charles Dana Gibson. Gibson was a talented and successful commercial artist in the USA, with his work covering the decades between 1890-1920. The pen and ink sketches were titled "The Widow and Her Friends" first published in Life Magazine and his own book in 1901. The depicted scenes are titled , expressing Gibson's dry wit. The Gibson Girl became synonymous with the ideal modern woman, tall, elegant, and independent.
