The series of 24 depicts the trials and tribulations of an attractive widow in the Gilded Age, as designed by Charles Dana Gibson(1867-1944). Gibson was a talented and successful commercial artist in the USA, with his work covering the decades between 1890-1920. The pen and ink sketches were titled the "Widow and Her Friends" first published in Life Magazine and the artists own book in 1901. The depicted scenes are titled, expressing Gibson's dry wit. " The Gibson Girl" became synonymous with the ideal modern woman, tall, elegant, and independent. The series was made into a set of blue and white transfer war earthenware plates by Royal Doulton, England, made circa 1902-1915. This plate is She Goes to the Fancy Dress Ball as Juliet".
