Chinese artisans like to put auspicious symbols on their craft. This snuff bottle on frosted glass has plenty. Mandarin ducks symbolize marital felicity or happy marriage. Fish sounds the same as the word for plenty. They are emblems of having plenty of everything. Lotus flower symbolizes purity and beautiful, and it sounds the same as year. Year by year there will be plenty of happiness and wealth. Not to mention the lotus pods are full of seeds - a fertility symbol.
The snuff bottle maker has an effective way working with the blue and white glass. He/she worked with the white glass and use the blue glass as accents. It is quite an artistic effort to paint with glass and the result is a beautiful bottle. The bottle has a flattened rectangular shape and ends in a flat oval foot. It is matched with a pale blue glass stopper encased in brass and a brass spoon.
This was purchased in the antique center in Tianjin, the seaport of Beijing in 2017.
