These French massive lanterns are a piece of masterly work and offer a spectacular decorative element. Six windows allow the lighting to be widely diffused. A set of twisted rods hugs the windows. Concave wrought iron capsules appear on the side of the lantern. And finally, large acanthus leaves adorn the base and top of the light fixture. The foliage ends in symmetry with a narrowing which offers the full look of the lantern.
Note, in classical Greek architecture, the stylized acanthus leaf particularly characterizes the capitals. The acanthus leaf was then massively used by Roman architecture. In the 12th century, the acanthus leaf was one of the main ornaments borrowed by Romanesque architecture from ancient architecture alongside foliage, palmettes, Greek and oval scrolls.
