It is topped with a bronze sphinx with a patina finish.

Egyptomania was a very popular artistic movement in the 19th century, born out of Europeans' fascination with Pharaonic Egyptian culture.
Although already popular in Roman times, Pharaonic art was rediscovered with Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign and the first travels of artists and collectors.
Architectural elements and decorations from rediscovered temples found their way into European interiors in the form of objects and furniture. The discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and all its furnishings was a new source of inspiration for designers, sparking an enthusiasm for Egyptian civilization that continues to this day.

Good overall condition, old marble restorations, a few chips.
