Sea fossil snuff bottles are not rare, but they seldom appear in the market. It is a gem of a bottle, with the natural remains of prehistoric creatures. It has a flattened round shape with a short raised oval foot, and a flat top with a wide opening. Modern bottles are not well hallowed. It has a matching stopper of the same material. Provenance or Chinese snuff bottles is hard to fathom. When I was shopping for snuff bottles in China, most sellers could not provide me with the provenance of the bottles they sold. Throughout the years, I have to make my own assumptions. With painted inside bottles, especially the ones that are signed and dated, and possibly with an art studio name, it is possible to trace the bottle could have come from a studio where a famous inside bottle painter worked. When stone bottles have more or less the same dimensions, I can assume they are factory produced, not a large factory, but a workshop with a number of employees. Cloisonne bottles came from places that produced cloisonne objects of art. So are the painted porcelain bottles, they most probably came from Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China.
I cannot venture to say I know for certain where this bottle was produced, except to say it was made in a small shop, its small size is due to the size of the rock itself. The fact it is not hollowed is because it is a bottle made recently in the 21st century.
