Butterflies are seen as symbols of happiness in marriage, as well as everlasting romantic love. The latter interpretation is due to a number of traditional Chinese stories in which butterflies play a significant part.
Vase is elaborately decorated to the lower section with butterflies of various sizes and colors flying amidst floral sprays. The effect is elegant and harmonious, and the choice of the butterflies has been made not only on the basis of their beauty, but also for their auspicious symbolism.
The large vase has an elongated neck with ruffled edge and gilt finish handles, rounded shoulders and elongated tapered body. The shoulder, the bottom, and the ruffled mouth rim are encircled by a Satsuma-style gilt enamel border.
Dimensions: 36 inches high (91.5 cm); 14 inches wide-diameter (36 cm).
Vase was acquired at a private sale auction in Nagasaki-Kyushu, Japan.
