Pochoir is a stencil-based printing process that was popular in Paris in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. It was used by fashion, design, and architectural illustrators. The designs were used as inspiration motifs for wall panels, textiles, ceramics, jewelry, etc. Pochoirs were hand colored with a process of layering color, making each image unique. The manual aspect of pochoir is its most valuable attribute and also its greatest failure as a printing medium. It is both labor intensive and time consuming, making it an expensive and slow process of printmaking. As a result, this technique was short lived and was replaced by more modern lithography techniques. Thus, pochoirs have become rare and highly collectible with the passage of time. This pochoir features botanical designs in soft color tones of greens, purples and golds. It has a wonderful quality and is in excellent condition. Horizontal format; 11.5 x 15 inches in size.
