The box can be removed from the stand. It is however a drop down desk! It is also an antique. This is such a great piece for a small space or for an area that you do not want to look much like an office. It has two poles that pull out and support the desk. When not in use it looks like a decorative box. I rarely encourage lacquer on an antique but I could see this lacquered in blue, red, green or white. It would look even more like a decorative box. It is in excellent condition with a few scrapes of finish at the top. A great item for a decorator looking for a One-Of-A-Kind item. Great for Chinoiserie decor.
