An antique art pottery vase from Pilkington's Tile and Pottery Company of England. The conical, bottle shaped vase was produced during the Art Nouveau period and bears a 1912 date mark underfoot. The vase is decorated with glossy and reflective oxblood glaze which the company introduced as ruby lustre in 1906. The vase is accented with a gilt rim. Very good condition with a few small scattered scratches and a grinding chip on the interior of the foot rim, measuring 7.25 in. height x 4.5 in. diameter (at widest). Fully marked on base with 3028 [model/form number] over the Pilkington's P Logo / XII [1912 date mark] / ENGLAND.
Pilkington's Tile and Pottery Company was founded in 1891 at Clifton Junction in Manchester. The company employed artists and chemists including John Chambers and William Burton, but also commissioned work from well-known designers of the era including C.F.A. Voysey, Walter Crane, Gordon Forsyth, and Lewis Day. Pilkington's used technical expertise and innovation to develop a range of striking artistic glazes, exhibiting the results at international exhibitions including Paris 1900, Milan 1904, Brussels 1910, and Turin 1911. King George V awarded the company a Royal Warrant in 1913 resulting in a name change to Pilkington’s Royal Lancastrian Pottery Company. The V&A (Victoria and Albert) Museum in London includes a range of Pilkington's art pottery in their collection.
