Aldo Londi for Bitossi - Mid-Century Modern Italian Art Pottery Lidded Vessel, 1950’s
This piece has the classic heavy textured surface Londi is known for. The bottom portion of the bowl is decorated with a yellow glaze and the upper portion provided with an unglazed brown wash. The inside of the bowl is fully glazed in off-white. The spherical fitted lid of the bowl is also decorated in an off-white glaze that is textured to match the yellow glazed portion of the bowl. The use of glazed and unglazed surfaces along with a simple color scheme further reinforces the simple elegance of this lidded vessel.
Designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi Ceramiche, Montelupo Italy. The bottom of the vessel has the original Rosenthal Netter import label.
ALDO LONDI (1911-2003) was one of Italy's most noted master ceramicists who spent most of his long and successful career creating exceptional works of great art and craft for the Italian ceramic’s manufacturer Bitossi Ceramiche.
Rosenthal Netter is a name that refers to a company rather than an individual. Rosenthal Netter was an American importer and distributor of decorative arts and home accessories, founded in 1950 by Irving Netter and his wife, Florence. The company specialized in importing high-quality ceramics, glassware, and other decorative objects from Italy and other parts of Europe.
Rosenthal Netter was known for its mid-century modern designs and its collaborations with renowned artists and designers of the time, including Aldo Londi, Bitossi, and Raymor. The company's products were sold in high-end department stores and specialty shops throughout the United States.
Rosenthal Netter ceased operations in the late 1970s, but its products continue to be highly sought after by collectors of mid-century modern design.
This piece has been attributed based on archival documentation, such as vintage catalogs, designer records, or other literature sources to Aldo Londi for Bitossi Ceramiche.
