Description
This elegant color serigraph, Loge de Théâtre, exemplifies Erté’s refined Art Deco aesthetic and lifelong fascination with theater, costume, and performance. The scene depicts a richly stylized theater box where elongated figures, lavish textiles, and ornamental detail converge in a composition that feels both intimate and theatrical. Soft pastel curtains contrast with bold black forms, while meticulous line work and patterning highlight Erté’s mastery of design and color harmony.
Published in 1980 in a strictly limited edition of 150, this example is hand signed and numbered 129/150. The work is presented in a dramatic, gallery quality frame that complements the composition and enhances its visual impact, making it an exceptional statement piece for collectors of Art Deco, fashion illustration, and theatrical art.
Artist Background
Erté, born Romain de Tirtoff (1892 to 1990), was a Russian born French artist and designer who became one of the defining figures of the Art Deco movement. His career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed fashion illustration, costume and set design, sculpture, graphic arts, and fine art prints.
Erté is perhaps best known for his iconic covers for Harper’s Bazaar and his glamorous designs for stage and film, including work for the Folies Bergère and Hollywood productions. His work is characterized by elegant silhouettes, opulent detail, and a sophisticated sense of drama. Today, Erté’s works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and his signed limited edition serigraphs remain highly collectible.
