Large Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Pair of Cow and Calf Figure Spill Vases
This charming pair of large Staffordshire pottery figure spill vases, dating from the Victorian period (circa 1860–1880), showcases the impressive scale and bold decoration characteristic of the era's popular ceramics.
The figures are designed as a mirrored pair, each depicting a large cow facing its counterpart. Each cow is accompanied by a calf, positioned to appear as if waiting to feed, reinforcing the theme of pastoral domesticity and fertility. The cows are distinctively colored in an orange-brown and white palette.
The figures stand in a scene featuring a stylized, flowing stream. Behind each cow and calf group is a tall tree trunk, which functions as a spill vase. The interior of the vase opening is finished in an unexpected orange color. The entire group is mounted on a clean, oval white base, simply accented with a single gilt line.
Dimensions: 10 3/4 inches high x 9 inches wide x 4 inches deep; (27.31cm high x 22.86cm wide x 10.16cm deep).
Historical Context: Staffordshire Spill Vases and Pastoral Sentimentalism
Spill Vases in Victorian Homes: These figures served a specific domestic function as spill vases (or "spill holders"). They were traditionally placed on mantelpieces or side tables to hold thin wooden splints or rolls of paper known as "spills." These were used to transfer flame from the fireplace or a lamp to light candles, pipes, or cigars. This integration of a practical item with a decorative ceramic piece was highly typical of Victorian functional art.
The Cow and Calf Motif: The cow and calf motif was a persistent and beloved subject among the 19th-century Staffordshire potteries. The figures were part of the mass-produced "flatback" genre, which catered to the middle and working classes. The cow symbolized rural prosperity and the peaceful, reliable cycle of nature. The pairing of cow and calf specifically highlighted themes of maternal nurture and abundance, appealing strongly to the Victorian sentimental view of idealized country life. The size and bright coloring of this pair were intended to create a noticeable, cheerful statement in the home.
