Amazing service for six found in Samarkand in 1976 and brought back through Pakistan, Switzerland and New York. This is a service designed for the Uighur population that lives in both Russia and China. It features a tureen used for dishes called "hotpots", served in generous bowls with bread and condiments, and rice.
The pattern is of a peacock, which are still sitting on the railings of the old noble lodges, now
guest houses in Bukhara and Samarkand. The service was manufactured in the GDR, now East Germany. It has a mark resembling the Dresden mark, and I assume the china was made in that region of East Germany. There are many serving pieces.
Being a chinaware glutton, I bought the whole thing. I was amazed to see it, because in that era there was not much available to buy in the Soviet Union. It shown out in a sea of poorly made
housewares.
The porcelain is a pure white with a band of yellow. There are sprays of pink flowers. The gilding is very prominent. It sets up and makes a very festive table. I hope someone buys it who will appreciate it many condiment bowls and know how to use it. Would make a lovely table for curries or hot pot dishes.
I would venture that this is a rare service in this country. It has only been used a few times but it has traveled. Remarkably, all the pieces have survived. Has many years of use left.
