Painter and etcher Addison Millar was born in Warren, Ohio, where he studied under John Bell. He moved to New York in 1883 and attended the Art Students League and the Shinnecock Summer School with William Merritt Chase, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris with Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. Millar exhibited in Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago galleries and was a member of the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design. His works are represented in the Detroit Institute of Arts, Library of Congress and the New York Public Library, and the Rhode Island School of Design. He enjoys the dubious distinction of being the first person mowed down by an automobile in Philadelphia, struck and killed there in 1913.
