This exquisite Neoclassical ebony jetware vase by E. J. Ridgway, crafted around 1870, is a stunning representation of fine 19th-century craftsmanship. The vase, with its elegant tapering shape, features elaborate handles adorned with gilt tracing and button-like prunts. Each side of the vase showcases extraordinary white enameled decorations, each depicting a unique Neoclassical scene.
On one side, two muses embrace while a hound looks away, capturing a moment of serene beauty. On the other side, a maiden rests upon a settee as a cherubic putti sneaks around, preparing the arrow of Eros, embodying the playful and romantic spirit of the era. The vase is in incredible condition with only minor gilt loss, maintaining its rich detailing and vibrant presence.
Measuring 10 inches tall and 5 inches at its widest, this rare vase is not only a remarkable decorative piece that can complement a variety of contemporary design themes but is also museum-worthy. It represents a rare example of jetware, a type of earthenware with a shiny black finish that serves as a ground for various decorative treatments including enameling, painting, printing, and jeweling.
Ebony, the trade name for this brand of jetware, was long believed to be the product of the Dudson factory. However, recent research concludes that it was made by E. J. Ridgway at the Bedford Works. This vase is a testament to Ridgway's exceptional skill and artistry, making it a treasured addition to any collection.
