This vintage studio art bowl is a beautiful work of art, by Artist Joseph Hysong ( 1925-2008). He is a Monterey California ceramic artist who was educated at San Jose State and in the 1950's and 1960's was an instructor at the University of Hawaii's Ceramic program with the likes of Claude Horan, and Toshiko Takaezu.
This bowl is utilizing a technique much like the rice grain bowl, where an organic substance is imbedded into the bowl to create a pattern and the organic substance burns off in the kiln leaving translucent indentations in a pattern. This piece is from a Santa Cruz Mountains collection featuring pieces from California and Hawaii.
