A rare and highly decorative pair of antique Spode Copeland botanical tazza compotes, dating to 1921. Each pedestal bowl is boldly decorated with a single, large botanical motif, featuring richly colored flowers and fruit. The undersides are exceptionally detailed, molded in three-dimensional naturalistic vines, leaves, and berries. The pedestal stems are sculpted as tree trunks, each entwined with a winged cherub clinging with arms and legs, all raised on rocaille bases adorned with a butterfly.
Exceptionally rare—we have never encountered another example like this. Best displayed as a symmetrical pair on a mantelpiece, these sculptural bowls benefit from elevated placement, allowing the beautifully modeled undersides with vines, leaves, and berries—as well as the cherub-adorned pedestals below—to be fully appreciated. Flanking a mirror, clock, or artwork, they create a refined focal point.
These sculptural bowls were created as an homage to early 19th-century English ceramics, as confirmed by the handwritten inscription on the underside:
Hand-written in red script: “Old English Period, A.D. 1815”
Printed in green: “Spode Copeland’s China England” (mark used from circa 1891)
Printed retailer mark: “David Collamore & Co. Ltd., Fifth Ave & 48th St., New York” (address used circa 1911–early 1920s)
Impressed date mark: T21 (August 1921)
David Collamore & Co. Ltd., (active 1840 to circa 1920's), was a prestigious New York retailer of luxury decorative arts. A retailer’s mark from David Collamore & Co. reflects both quality and association with the upper tier of the American luxury market of the period.
Each pedestal screws securely into the bowl with original factory-installed bronze fittings, allowing the pieces to be separated for safe shipping.
