Inspired by 17th-century English Charles II seating, this late 19th-century revival chair features classic barley twist turning, cane back-work, and bold architectural carving. The high back is framed with deeply carved scrolling foliage and centered by a crown motif flanked by reclining putti—an ornamental detail that gives the piece its stately presence. The same crown form is repeated in the carved front stretcher, creating a balanced, intentional design from top to base.
With its dramatic silhouette, openwork carving, and strong vertical lines, this chair reads beautifully in an entry hall, study, or library, and makes a distinctive statement piece beside a fireplace or in a layered traditional interior.
JUNE’S THOUGHTS
This is one of those chairs that immediately gives a room a point of view. I love the way the carving adds depth and character, while the cane and openwork keep it visually light. It works beautifully with darker woods, but it’s equally compelling as contrast in a cleaner space where you want one piece to carry the architecture.
Style it simply—stacked books, a small side table, and one object with substance—and it becomes a quiet anchor that feels considered and collected, ready for your home.
