This tall Chinese jar comes from the Martaban wares, where it was produced during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). This tall jar is made of varnished brown glaze and features on its belly carved dragons, which are an auspicious pattern in China. The top of the jar displays ceramic loops, perhaps to thread a rope, suggesting this jar was used for shipping of water or food. This jar is an example of the exquisite Ming dynasty ceramic artwork, and further exemplifies the specialization of the different Chinese wares during this period.
