When I think of malachite, the beautiful objects often mounted in ormulu associated with Russian royalty came to mind. But most Chinese malachite snuff bottles are probably not Russian malachite, but resulted from stones brought back from African countries of Congo,Zaire and Namibia. The beautiful variations of green, unique to malachite is perfect to be made into art objects. This malacite stone is made into a gourd shape snuff bottle, with realistic details as a stem (stopper), tendril and leaves and the base. The vertical parallel bands of green add to the elegance of this gourd shape bottle. The small bottle feels good in the hand
From my observations, after China reopened to the world at the end of the 1970's, craftsmen were busy making art objects to be sold the the Western market. The snuff bottles from that time were much more creative than the contemporary snuff bottles made today.
