Bloodstone is a dark green variety of chalcedony adorned with a splatter of bright red. It has been a popular gemstone for at least two thousand years. But it is more rare than agates and jaspers because only two has ever come by way in my years of collecting. I like the differentiation of blacks, dark and light greens, thin white lines and the tiny spots of red. The bottle is a flattened oval shape with sloping shoulders and tapering towards a raise oval foot. This was purchased in the late 1980's when the Chinese craftsmen returned to their craft and produced snuff bottles to sell to the Western markes. The snuff bottles made in this period vary in quality, many of them were carved in small shops. This bottle's value is in the beauty of the stone, and one can overlook the not so perfect top and feet. It is matched with a Burmese jade stopper, See less
