The reign mark is written in zhuan-shu script (archaic seal script). Chi-en lung (Qianlong-Ching dynasty); mark appears on the base, in underglaze blue.
Note: The archaic seal mark really came to prominence on an even greater range of ceramic wares in the Qianlong period (1736-1795), largely ousting the regular script.
Provenance: private collection in Nagasaki-Japan 1963-2009. Auctioned in Japan in 2009 by a private Utah collector 2009-present.
Important: We do not attribute this piece to the Chi-en lung period of the Ching dynasty. It is most probable that it is an "early Republic piece" exported to the Japanese market. Nagasaki was also an important conduit for Chinese goods and information for the Japanese market. Various Chinese merchants and artists sailed between the Chinese mainland and Nagasaki. Some actually combined the roles of merchant and artist such as 18th century Yi Hai. It is believed that as much as one-third of the population of Nagasaki at this time may have been Chinese.
