The Murphy Chair Company was founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1872 by M.J. Murphy and later relocated to Owensboro, Kentucky. The company was known for it's exclusive chair designs and this sewing bench is no exception. The design was unique to the company.
The dark stained wood is likely mahogany. There is a low, curved back for ease in fitting beneath a sewing table, shaped crest rail, Y-shaped splat with a generous and extremely comfortable seat. Legs are square with a ring-turned design, giving the piece an overall Craftsman feel.
