Dating to the late 1940s, the bowl belongs to the transformative period when Anderson became Blenko's first resident designer and helped establish the bold modernist vocabulary for which the West Virginia glassmaker became famous.

The hand-blown bowl has a broad organic form accented by two large, free-form applied glass handles — the distinctive “blob” handles that give the design its collector nickname. Their substantial mass creates beautiful shifts in color and light, from brilliant blue-green through deeper concentrations of turquoise.

Anderson's work for Blenko introduced increasingly sculptural, organic and modern forms influenced by Scandinavian design, helping move the company's decorative glass decisively into the American modernist era.

At approximately 11.5 inches wide, this is a substantial piece with wonderful presence as both a functional bowl and a sculptural art-glass object.

A striking example of early postwar Blenko and an appealing design from the Winslow Anderson period.
