Impressive, large-scale , ebonized French bureau plat or writing desk with removable inlaid leather top. Features an ebonized mahogany veneer over solid oak frame and drawers. Two pull out side writing leaves, each with two brass pulls (one is close, but does not match the other three).
The writing surface features gold tooled blond leather, accentuated with a unique gold laurel banding to the side perimeter. Functioning drawers with locks. There is a newer cutout to the lower side of the left interior drawer frame, reason unknown. The whole on brass paw feet. An extremely heavy, solid, and imposing statement piece in the right room. Thoroughly cleaned, polished, and ready to place.
Overall in good antique condition with the expected nicks and scrapes commensurate with age and use. The top, likely replaced, shows heavy warping, and while it stays firmly in place using its dowel guides, the veneer has begun to bubble and crack in a handful of spots due to the stress. The decision has been made not to attempt veneer repair at this time, though it could certainly be done. (Please note: the veneer continues to actively warp and bubble over time--please let me know if you would like additional photographs documenting the changes. At this point in time, the top would benefit from restoration and re-glue.) Pressure from the top also stiffens the action of the side leaves, though they are functional. Wear to the ebonized finish throughout, commensurate with age and use.
