Japonism was the craze all over and bamboo furniture was very popular. I was once in Claude Monet's house in Giverny and he had a smoked bamboo coatrack in his entrance hall. Whether he had a magazine or paper rack like this one, I would not know, but this is an interesting piece of accessory with S scrolls with a hint of Art Noveau. It is made of bamboo that had been smoked and the shelves are made of tiny bamboo woven into a mat. All the ends are capped with brass like metal. The construction is very sturdy, and it is not just an antique, it is a piece that can be used. See less
