Gemma Taccogna (1923-2007) was an Italian-born artist who specialized in papier-mâché. Her parents moved from Bari, Italy, to the United States the year Gemma was born. They did not believe in toys, so when she was a child she made her own, inventing papier-mâché for herself, if not the world, by experimenting with paper and flour from her mother's kitchen.

She created wildly whimsical figures in her studio in Mexico from 1954 until 1966, before settling in southern California. Gemma attributed her ascent to international acclaim to Peggy Guggenheim, who chanced upon her work at an exhibition and showcased the papier-mâché figures in her esteemed Venice museum. Famous collectors, such as fashion designer Anna Sui, boast jaw-dropping collections of her work.
