An antique heavy bronze Chinese “Ding” vessel. Dings are ancient Chinese cauldrons standing upon legs with two fancy handles. They are one of the most important shapes in Chinese ritual bronzes, mostly for offerings.
In Chinese history and culture, possession of one or more ancient ding is often associated with power and dominion over the land. Therefore, the ding is often used as an implicit symbolism for power. For example, emperors were buried with nine ding, feudal lords with seven, ministers with five, and scholar-bureaucrats with three or one. The vessels served as symbols of authority for the elite.
Decorated on all sides with symbols. Constructed of bronze and very heavy, over 25 pounds. Includes Black wood platform with recessed cut-outs for the feet. Dates to early 1900’s.
Measures 11” high to top of handles, 11” wide and 7 ¼” deep. Wood base is 9” x 5 ½”.
