A very rarely found, early Wedgwood majolica glazed shell and coral open salt cellar – date marked 1872.
In the manner of Palissy, the globose Volute snail shell shaped cellar is glazed in a mottled blue and brown, and sits on a raised yellow ochre coral form pedestal with a brown mounded base. The interior is clear glazed, showing the color of the clay, the underside is glazed in a pale green and marked as shown.
A Volute is a deep-water marine mollusk with a thick spiral shell that is colorful and prized by collectors. You won't see this one again.
