The very cool thing is that the motif on the back is a steamboat! These are likely early to mid 1800s given the way they are constructed. The steamboat painted on the back suggests they might be 1840s or 50s? They are painted black with gold painted design and accents on the spindles, legs and seats. These are made of pieced wood; note the 9th photo where you can see this construction. There is a notch on the bottom front of each arm; also just a primitive cut to make a design. In the last photo you'll see more of this construction, where a sliver is missing. Also see the seats of the chairs, which are one solid piece of wood which are hand planed. You can feel the roughness. The paint is in pretty good condition with wear consistent with age. They are both very sturdy and could be used to sit in or just to appreciate. These are truly one of a kind! See less

There's a small sliver of wood missing from a curve in one of the arms, also small. There are nicks and scratches in the paint that would be consistent with chairs of this age but the paint is not loose or chipping. The patina is fabulous. less
