Rookwood Bookends designed by Kataro Shirayamadi in 1928. These bookends are in good condition and just have three hard to see chips in the glaze on one bookend, the other bookend is perfect. Kataro Shirayamadi (1865-1948) was considered a gifted and artistic designer for Rookwood and designed an outstanding quality set of pottery polychrome floral bookends that this set offered. Floral basket bookends are hard to find and measure 6 1/4”H x 6”W. Rookwood was founded by Maria Longworth Nichols Storer a wealthy young woman who was inspired by the Japanese ceramics displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial International Exposition opened the first art pottery in the United States in Cinncinnatti Ohio. Rookwood won many prizes for their artistic pottery.
